Refer back to the last post on 8/24/16 on What Do You Think This Is? And the answer is... c) see a specialist.
Why? The patient presented with a history of melanoma and noticed a new streak on her toenail in the past several months so there was a concern for melanoma in the bed of the nail. When it is in the nail matrix, where the nail grows, it can create a longitudinal streak as the nail continues to grow out. The best way to rule in or rule out melanoma is to take a biopsy of the nail plate and skin underneath.
Luckily for this patient, pathology report was negative for malignancy so she can expect the nail the grow back normally in 8-12 months.
